Why Visit Orlando in December
Why Visit Orlando in December

Why should you visit Orlando in the month of December? The answer is: because during this time of the year Orlando becomes a holiday extravaganza! With dozens of events, themed attractions, holiday meet, and greets, meals and more, you and your family will never run out of things to do!

When is the best time to Go?

While heading to the parks during the actual holidays is completely magical, the crowds can be hard to handle. On the other hand, if you go during the first half of the month, you’ll experience lower crowd levels, but miss out on some of the events scheduled closer to the actual holidays. So we’ve got a short list of pros and cons for each half of the month.

Heading to the parks from December 1st to the 19th.Epcot CHRISTMAS TREE

Pro: this is traditionally considered “Low Season” for most of us in the travel business. The reason is that many travelers were off work or school for Thanksgiving and have another break coming up for Christmas and New Years. So the majority of guests can’t get off work and travel between the two breaks. Which means that you’ll get cheaper rates on airfare, bookings, and rental cars. You’re also more likely to get accommodation as many places fill up quickly closer to the holiday.

Cons: While many of the exciting events and happenings around Orlando start as early as November, there are things that you may miss out on if you go early. For example, most folks don’t know that much of what is offered during the Christmas Party at the Magic Kingdom is part of every day during the week of Christmas. So if you can’t get tickets to MVMCP during your trip you may miss out on fan favorites like the Holiday Wishes, ‘snow’ on Main Street USA, and a few of the varied holiday Meet and Greets.

That said, you can still find Santa, ride the Jingle Cruise and experience the Festival of the Holidays in Epcot! And all of the Resorts are decked halls and all! (Read more about a holiday tour of the Resorts here)

Heading to the parks from December 20th through January 6th

This is the ultimate peak season for Orlando. Every park, attraction, and the area has something to offer for the holidays. So what’s the trade-off for visiting at the most wonderful time of the year?

Pro: Full access to all the holiday magic, including some things that are usually included in the ticketed events! There are also special meet and greets and events only happening at this time of the year!

Con: The parks are insanely crowded, so much so that you may have to limit your wish list to those things only found seasonally! Also, the prices are much higher for a trip during this time window, so you’ll be spending more on accommodation and have less for souvenirs and holiday goodies.

Chilly Weather

Something that most visitors don’t realize is that Orlando can get chilly during December. With potential lows at freezing and highs generally in the 60s, it’s perfect sweater weather! And your trip will be much drier now than if you traveled in the summertime. Perfect for enjoying all the ‘snow’.

Events at Christmas Time

So what can you do at Christmas in Orlando? Well, Walt Disney World has its annual Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party at the Magic Kingdom. This celebration is an extra ticketed event, and it fills up fast so make sure you purchase a ticket as soon as you know you’re going! You can also head over to Epcot for the International Festival of the Holidays! And Hollywood Studios has its own holiday nighttime spectacular “Jingle Bell, Jingle Bam!”. And don’t forget the holiday treats!

The Land in the Holidays Orlando in December

Universal Orlando is the home of the Macy’s Holiday Parade with extra floats featuring the characters you’ve come to love at the parks. You can even meet the Grinch! Sea World has a living Nativity, a Floating Christmas Tree show, meet and greets with Rudolf and special versions of all the fan favorites. Legoland has the Bricktacular with Lego Santa and more! And then there’s ICE at Gaylord Palms! These are just a few of the happenings around Orlando in December!
