Florida’s Wineries

Homes4uu Blog Florida's WineriesWhen most people think of Wineries, they think of sprawling fields in places like California, France, and Italy. But what most people don’t know is that Florida is also wine country! Florida’s wineries are award-winning and home to some very unique grapes.

Most wine grapes grow in more temperate climates like that of California or France. So up until recently more humid climates, like Florida, were far too wet for healthy grapevines to grow. But in the early 1900’s a group of researchers and wine lovers wanted to change all of that. The Florida Grape Growers Association was established in 1923 to “Serve Farmers and hobbyist interested in growing grapes in Florida”. The FGGA had a monumental task in front of them: developing a grape that could handle the overly moist Floridian environment. But with the help of the University of Florida, they managed to grow varieties that included Stover, Blanc Du Bois, Swanee and Miss Blanc which allowed Florida’s wineries to begin production.

Florida's WineriesFlorida Wine does have a broader meaning than just wine made from grapes though. Florida is tropical fruit country, and for almost 3 decades wineries have been making wine from Oranges, Mangos and other tropical fruit, even going as far as adding those fruits to traditional wines for a truly tropical taste.

There are many ways to enjoy Florida wines and the Wineries that make them. You can go on a winery tour in the Orlando area and you can even go on a more kid-friendly ‘U-Pick’ tour to one of the many wineries and fruit farms in the area. These are some links to help you find the right tour for you:
